The three Ragas being explored in this course range from having six notes (Puriya) to five (Chandrakauns) and then four with a touch of the fifth to make it to the compulsory number to form a Raga (Hindol). In addition, this study will involve the understanding of other Ragas that share closeness in terms of Swaras with each of these three. Marva and Sohini, those have the same Swaras as Puriya will be reviewed in the light of their distinctive characters. Malkauns, which has a Komal Nishad as opposed to the Shuddha Nishad in Chandrakauns, is a Raga with a completely different Prakriti. Malkauns will be revisited in this context. Theory- Principles of Raga formulation, Dashvidh Raga Lakshanas, Evolution of Raga from Jaati Gayan, Raga formulation in Carnatic music.
